New countertops can change a kitchen quickly, but installation may involve cutting, grinding, drilling, or polishing materials that contain crystalline silica. Those activities can produce fine dust that should not be allowed to drift through an occupied home.

A September 12, 2026, Guardian story by Sara Sneath describes silicosis among workers, including countertop fabrication workers, and notes that sufferers are getting younger. The report on preventable silica exposure concerns workplace hazards, where repeated or intense exposure can be very different from a household renovation. Still, it offers a useful reminder for homeowners: dust control should be part of the project plan, not an afterthought.

Ask where the material will be cut

Whenever possible, major shaping and polishing should happen at a properly equipped fabrication shop rather than inside the home. Countertops often need some adjustment during installation, however, so ask the contractor what work may be done on site.

Get specific. Will installers cut stone, engineered stone, concrete, tile, mortar, or cement board? Will they use wet methods or tools connected to dust extraction? Where will any outdoor cutting take place? A calm, detailed conversation is more useful than a general promise to “keep things clean.”

Cutting outdoors can reduce indoor dust, but location still matters. A saw placed beside an open window, air intake, doorway, play area, or neighboring entrance can send dust where people breathe. Ask that cutting be positioned away from openings and occupied areas, with doors and windows nearby kept closed.

Separate the work zone from the home

If dusty work must happen indoors, the work area should be isolated before tools start. Discuss temporary barriers, covered doorways, protected heating and cooling vents, and a clear route for workers carrying tools and debris. Closing an interior door alone may not contain fine particles.

Turn off local fans that could spread dust unless they are part of a planned exhaust setup. Ask the contractor how air will move during the job and whether the home’s heating or cooling system needs to be adjusted. Do not independently block essential combustion air or alter equipment operation. If the plan affects a furnace, water heater, or other fuel-burning appliance, ask a qualified professional how to proceed safely.

Keep children, pets, pregnant household members, older adults, and anyone with breathing problems away from the work zone. This is a practical exposure-reduction step, not a claim that a brief household encounter carries the same risk as years of occupational exposure.

Make cleanup part of the contract

Visible dust is only part of the issue. Dry sweeping or using compressed air can lift settled particles back into the air. Ask installers to use cleanup methods appropriate for fine construction dust, such as wet wiping and a suitable filtered vacuum. An ordinary household vacuum may leak fine material or become contaminated.

Agree in advance on who will clean floors, cabinets, ledges, vents, and the pathway between the work area and the exit. Protective sheeting and debris should be removed carefully so collected dust is not shaken loose indoors.

After the crew finishes, resist the urge to immediately run fans throughout the house. Follow the contractor’s ventilation plan, inspect nearby surfaces in good light, and request additional cleaning if dust remains. Replace an HVAC filter only when appropriate for the system and manufacturer’s instructions. A higher-efficiency filter is not automatically suitable for every unit.

Use a short pre-installation checklist

Before work begins, confirm the material being installed, the location of any cutting, the tools used to control dust, the boundaries of the work zone, the treatment of vents and doorways, the cleanup method, and when the room can be occupied again. Put these points in writing with the project details.

Homeowners do not need to become industrial hygiene specialists to ask sensible questions. The goal is straightforward: prevent dust where possible, contain what cannot be prevented, and clean it without sending it airborne again. A few minutes of planning can make a countertop installation easier to live with while supporting safer practices for everyone on site.
